What if the edge of our solar system isn’t a solid boundary at all? Voyager 2, launched by NASA in 1977, travelled billions of miles into interstellar space and helped uncover findings that challenged scientists’ understanding of the heliosphere — the enormous bubble created by the Sun’s solar wind.
In 2018, Voyager 2 crossed the heliopause, the boundary separating the solar wind’s influence from the interstellar environment. Unlike Voyager 1, its twin, Voyager 2 still had a functioning plasma instrument during the crossing. The data revealed that particles can move across this boundary in both directions, suggesting that the Sun’s protective bubble is more complicated than a sealed wall.
Another puzzle emerged when scientists compared the distances at which the two spacecraft crossed the heliopause. Voyager 1 crossed at approximately 122 astronomical units, while Voyager 2 crossed at around 119. Despite encountering different conditions in the solar cycle, the distances were remarkably similar. Scientists continue to investigate what shapes this boundary and how the heliosphere interacts with the wider galaxy.
But Voyager 2’s story goes beyond scientific discoveries. With its power supply steadily declining, NASA engineers have been carefully switching off equipment and redesigning power use to keep the spacecraft transmitting valuable data.
Discover the science behind the heliopause, the mysteries of interstellar space, and the remarkable engineering keeping one of humanity’s oldest space explorers alive.

This video is for educational and informational purposes. It presents scientific findings and ongoing questions about Voyager 2, the heliosphere and interstellar space. Some explanations remain incomplete, and researchers continue to investigate the observations. The word “impossible” in the title is used as a dramatic expression, not as a claim that the discovery violates the laws of physics. Scientific interpretations may evolve as new evidence becomes available.
