Every Rank in the Roman Empire

How high could an ordinary person actually rise in the Roman Empire? What began as a simple military hierarchy became a complex system of ranks, titles, wealth, citizenship, political power, and social status. A young Roman could enter the army as a recruit and, through years of service, rise to positions such as legionary, optio, centurion, and even primus pilus. But the military was only one of the many ladders that existed inside Roman society. In this video, we explore the different levels of Roman power — from ordinary soldiers and specialists to centurions, equestrians, senators, provincial governors, wealthy local elites, freedmen, slaves, and finally the emperor. We’ll look at what each position meant, how people could rise through Roman society, what privileges came with higher status, and what could happen when you fell. Because in Rome, power wasn't determined by one simple rank. It was a hierarchy of overlapping ladders — and the higher you climbed, the more dangerous the fall became.
