Gayan Bayan - Sattriya Nritya Performance, Uttar Kamalabari Satra, Majuli Island, Assam

The Sattriya Nritya is a major Indian Classical Dance form originating at the Vaishnavite Monasteries of Majuli Island in Assam promoted by the Holy Saint Reformer of Assam - Srimanta Shankardeva. The Sattiya Art grew with the Bhakti cult of Assam across the 'Satras' of Assam and was mostly practiced by the monks of these Satras in the form of dance and dramas related to the life of Lord Krishna. These dance and dramas were composed by the Holy Saint reformer Srimanta Shankardeva and his disciple Sri Madhavadeva. The Sattriya dance performance was earlier enacted only by the male monks of the Satras but later it began to be performed by the female dancers as well. Today the Sattriya Nritya has found its place in the World Stage and is recognized as one among the Eight Classical Dance forms of India.
