This week we continue our discussion of R-controlled vowels by studying words that use the IR pattern to make an /er/ sound. All the words on this week's list contain a digraph or blend. Students notice that the IR chunk usually appears in the middle of a one-syllable word (ex: shirt, chirp). As they review the meanings of each word on the list, students label parts of speech. They also review the Doubling Rule, which states that spellers must doubling the consonant before adding a vowel suffix to words that end with one vowel and one consonant. Although the rule doesn't apply to most of the verbs on this week's list since they end with two consonants (ex: squirm, twirl), the rule must be followed for verbs that end with IR (ex: stir, stirring, stirred).
