The Enrichment Science Podcast Ep 14

Enrichment is not a bonus, a special event, or an occasional toy—it is part of the standard of care. In this candid conversation, Lara Joseph and Dr. Jason Crean explain what enrichment is, what it is not, and why the word is often misunderstood. If an object or activity does not meaningfully engage the animal, influence behavior, or improve quality of life, simply calling it enrichment does not make it so. The hosts discuss choice, control, complexity, duration, natural history, dietary variety, observation, and engagement of both mind and body. They also challenge caregivers and animal organizations to make enrichment a consistent welfare practice that encourages movement, curiosity, manipulation, learning, and species-appropriate behavior.
