ROMANIA ERUPTS: Georgescu Supporters Chant Outside Detention Centre As He Faces 30-Day Detention

Romania’s Bucharest Court of Appeal on Tuesday ordered former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen into preventive detention for 30 days, overturning an earlier ruling that had placed them under judicial control. Police vehicles arrived at Bucharest’s Central Detention Centre as supporters gathered outside, chanting “Calin, Calin!” and waving Romanian flags, while gendarmes formed a cordon behind metal barriers. Georgescu and Rusen are being investigated by Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) over alleged involvement in an organised criminal group and aggravated fraud. Prosecutors allege that a businessman was deceived in a scheme involving promised access to foreign financing, causing an alleged loss of 1.1 million euros. Georgescu, who finished first in the opening round of Romania’s 2024 presidential election, was later barred from standing in the rerun after the Constitutional Court annulled the original vote. #calingeorgescu #romania #bucharest #romanianews #georgescu #georgescusupporters #romaniapolitics #bucharestprotest #romaniapolitics #diicot #breakingnews #europe #europenews #romanianelection #georgescudetention In this Times Now World News report, we break down the this topic: Stay connected with Times Now World for real-time global news and analysis: 🌐 Read full coverage: https://www.timesnownews.com/world 📱 Instagram:   / timesnow.world   🐦 Follow us on X: https://x.com/TimesNow_World #timesnowworld #worldnews #breakingnews
