Every model of how stars live and die says the Milky Way should hold about a hundred million black holes, and in sixty years we have confirmed fewer than a hundred. Almost every one we know of was found because it is eating a companion star and glowing in X-rays. The quiet ones give off nothing at all, and the models say they are the vast majority. This investigation asks where they are, and how close the nearest one to us might be. It also asks how you find something that emits no light. Three were found by the wobble of the star beside them. One turned up entirely by accident. From a 1964 rocket over New Mexico to Hubble, Chandra and the European Space Agency's Gaia spacecraft, this is the story of learning to hear silence. On December 2, 2026, the catalog that may hide the rest is scheduled to open.
