In this video, I like to share a detailed look at the kaiseki dinner experience at Suiun, a traditional Japanese ryokan located in the hot spring town of Gora in Hakone. My wife and I stayed for three nights, and the highlight of our visit was the multi-course dinner on our 3rd night included as part of the ryokan’s half-board offering. Initially skeptical due to mixed online reviews about the food, we were pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the meals. On our final night, we were served a special 10-course seafood-focused kaiseki meal, available only to guests staying more than two nights. The restaurant is exclusive to hotel guests, with private dining rooms creating a quiet, intimate setting. The meal began with beautifully plated lobster sashimi, followed by assorted sashimi, a crab ginger soup, and a boiled fish with yuzu. Other standout dishes included grilled “Princess fish,” wagyu filet, a unique chawanmushi with cod roe, snow crab tempura, and a nigiri sushi set. The dinner concluded with fresh fruit and a lightly sweet milk cake. Despite initial concerns, both the food and dining experience far exceeded expectations, with fresh ingredients, thoughtful presentation, and a satisfying variety across all courses.
