To help delay bud break and prevent frost damage, I am performing late pruning. By pruning late or delayed pruning, the vines bud break will be delayed. This happens because the vine needs to spread its energy out over many more buds rather than a much smaller amount. Additionally, the release of sap when pruning late will cause a small loss of carbohydrates which can help to slow the process of the vine leafing out. Other topics in this video are the types of vines that I have planted in the Pittsburgh, PA area, some winter damage prevention measures, and a surprise finding (It's a Praying Mantis Egg Sack). The vines that I am growing in this little backyard vineyard are Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Blaufrankisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Traminette, Noiret, and Marquette.
