North of Grand Rapids, in Minnesota's North Central forest landscape, John & Thor walk through Rajala Forestry property at Orange Lk Rd (central Itasca County). This is a classic application of irregular continuous cover shelterwood with diverse natural regeneration. Previous light entries by Rajala Forestry have retained nearly all of the high quality long lived mature trees (White/Red Pine, Red Oak, Sugar Maple), a good amount of mid-story short lived species which have grown now to ecological maturity (Paper Birch, Balsam Fir, Aspen) and a dozen other miscellaneous species of great ecological value. We have both compositional and structural diversity. And the natural regeneration that has assembled itself is robust, diverse, and perfectly suited to their favored microsites.
