📖 The romero and salvia rinse is one of hundreds of things my mother kept, and they are all in The Old Mexican Way, including the page that warns hair is where the lies are thickest: https://oldmexicanway.com
I have never dyed my hair, and I have gray hair. Both are true. What my mother gave me was not a way to erase the gray. It was a rinse that keeps it dark and soft and takes the yellow out, made from two plants by the door and a tin of black tea. In this video I tell you the recipe, exactly what it does, and exactly what it does not do: it tones what is there. It does not reverse gray, and nothing in a kitchen does.
The rinse and the six habits:
1️⃣ El enjuague de romero y salvia. Two handfuls of rosemary, one of sage, three bags of black tea, four cups of water. Simmer 20 minutes covered, leave overnight, strain. Fridge, one week. Pour through three times after washing, do not rinse out, dark towel, air dry. Twice a week.
2️⃣ What it does and what it does not. Tannins stain porous white hair a faint tint that builds over a month and washes out in four or five washes. The gray-reversal study everyone shares: real, single hairs, young people, stress lifting. Not an offer to a woman after 50.
3️⃣ The enemy is the yellow, not the gray. Smoke, sun, hard water and heat stain white hair. Sage takes the yellow out. A spoon of white vinegar in a cup of water once a month if your water is hard.
4️⃣ The rebozo and the water. White hair burns and dries. Hat or scarf at noon, wash less, warm not hot.
5️⃣ Nunca te las arranques. Seven do not come to the funeral (folklore), but a pulled root scars and the regrowth stands up wiry. Scissors, never tweezers.
6️⃣ The ends, the moon and the braid. A finger's width every month (the new moon is folklore we keep), a loose braid at night and in the sun.
7️⃣ When gray is not just the years. Fast white in a season, in a patch, with tiredness, cold, tingling hands, or a white patch of skin under it: thyroid, B12, vitiligo. One blood draw. Some of these give the color back when treated.
The honest word: the rinse is a faint tint on the outside of the hair. Stop and it is gone in a month. My mother's pewter braid was partly the pot and partly her blood. The book itself warns (p134) that hair is where the lies are thickest, so I am careful. If you love your dye, keep it. The rinse is kind to the weeks between the boxes and to growing it out.

My name is Bertha. This channel is the old ways, from the women in my family to you. I was widowed at 49 after thirty-one years, I raised six children in my mother's house in Guadalajara, and I have never bought a box of dye. Tell me when your first gray came and what YOUR mother did about hers, and tell me your county too. I read every one.
This is not medical advice. Hair that goes white fast, in a patch, or with other symptoms belongs to a doctor. Test any rinse on one hidden strand first, especially on bleached or chemically treated hair.
