Our journey started early in the morning as we crossed the stunning 4 km-long Sangupiddi Bridge over the Jaffna Lagoon. Craving a quick break in the scorching heat, we chased down a local ice cream truck on the highway and chilled out with a cup of chocolate tutty frutti ice cream before heading toward Mullaithivu. Things took a deep, emotional turn as we reached the Nandikadal Lagoon. Standing at the site where the Sri Lankan Civil War finally came to an end after the death of Prabhakaran brought back memories of news articles from that era and the tragic loss of thousands of innocent lives. As we pushed further along the coast, we passed through active landmine clearing zones where halo trust and the NGO DASH are still working tirelessly to clear explosives left behind by the Tamil Liberation Army. Just when we thought the intensity was behind us, Google Maps routed our tuk tuk into extremely remote Sri Lankan villages. The scenery was breathtaking—we drove down dirt roads past local huts, lakes, reservoirs, and spotted pelicans, hornbills, and peacocks up close. But excitement quickly turned into panic when we realized we were almost out of petrol with no fuel station for miles!
