Kanheri Caves: Episode 2 Hidden inside Mumbai is one of the largest Buddhist cave cities in the world. Carved into ancient rock over 2,000 years ago, it once functioned as a thriving monastic city. Carved into ancient basalt over 60 million years ago, the Kanheri Caves developed over centuries into a vast Buddhist monastic settlement, serving as a centre for learning, meditation, and pilgrimage. As we move through the site, we uncover how this complex functioned as a living community—supported by rock-cut water systems, monsoon engineering, and a network of patronage from merchants, monks, and lay followers connected to Indian Ocean trade routes. Inside the great chaitya hall, early rock-cut architecture in India preserves the memory of timber construction. Ribbed ceilings, barrel-vaulted forms, and carefully structured interiors reflect a direct translation from wood into stone. Over time, the site evolved alongside Buddhist religious practices, introducing sculptural imagery of the Buddha and bodhisattvas such as Avalokiteśvara—marking a shift toward more developed devotional traditions. We then travel to the Mandapeshwar Caves, another important cave site in Mumbai with a very different history. Generally dated to the 6th–8th century CE, this Hindu cave temple dedicated to Shiva reflects the rise of Shaivism in western India. The cave is organised around a central mandapa (hall), giving the site its name—“Lord of the Hall.” Mandapeshwar later underwent significant transformation during the Portuguese colonial period, when it was repurposed for Christian use. Today, it remains an active place of worship—standing in contrast to Kanheri, which survives as a preserved archaeological and historical site. Together, the Kanheri Caves and Mandapeshwar Caves reveal two parallel histories—Buddhism and Shaivism in India, expressed through architecture, devotion, and centuries of change. This episode explores how religion, trade, and landscape shaped ancient India, carved directly into stone.
