Why did Jesus tell His disciples that it was better for them that He go away?
In the hours before His death, Jesus made a promise that seemed almost impossible to understand. His disciples were facing the loss of the person they had followed, yet He told them that His departure would be to their advantage.
He spoke of a Helper who would come after Him. But what would this Helper do? Why did Jesus connect His departure to the Helper’s coming? And how could His absence become the beginning of something the disciples had not yet experienced?
In this Bible Deepwell investigation, we follow Jesus’ farewell teaching in John 13–16, examining His promises about the Helper, the Spirit of truth, and the disciples’ future. We then turn to Acts 1–2 to explore how the narrative continues with the coming of the Holy Spirit and the disciples’ commission to be witnesses.
Rather than forcing a theological conclusion, we distinguish what the passages explicitly say from broader interpretations. We examine the sequence of Jesus’ words, the different functions He attributes to the Helper, and the limits of what the text explains.
📖 IN THIS EPISODE:
• Why Jesus’ departure troubled His disciples
• What Jesus meant when He promised, “I will not leave you as orphans”
• How the Helper would teach the disciples and remind them of Jesus’ words
• Why the Helper’s testimony about Jesus matters
• What John 16 says about sin, righteousness, and judgment
• How Jesus connects His departure with the coming of the Helper
• How Acts 1–2 continues the story through the Spirit’s coming and the disciples’ witness
Bible Deepwell explores difficult questions, overlooked details, mysterious passages, and the context behind the text.
