Every month, millions of people pay for gym memberships they may barely use. But where does that money actually go? This documentary follows a gym membership dollar through the economics of the fitness industry—from automated membership payments and franchise royalties to commercial rent, equipment financing, advertising, and the landlords behind America's former big-box retail spaces. Using Planet Fitness as a detailed case study, we examine why the economics of a gym are fundamentally different from a restaurant or other service business. A gym can serve far more members without proportionally increasing its biggest costs, creating a business model built around recurring revenue, fixed expenses, membership churn, and scale. The story also goes back to Bally Total Fitness, whose aggressive membership-sales model eventually collided with accounting problems, lawsuits, debt, and bankruptcy. That history helps explain why the next generation of budget gyms adopted a very different approach: low monthly prices, recurring payments, franchising, and enormous membership bases. We'll examine Planet Fitness franchise royalties, advertising funds, equipment costs, rent, EBITDA margins, Black Card memberships, member attrition, same-club sales, and the changing supply of former department-store and big-box retail locations. The documentary also looks at the central contradiction behind the industry: whether a member visits twelve times a month or never walks through the doors, much of the gym's cost structure remains essentially unchanged. Sources referenced in the documentary include Planet Fitness franchise disclosures and company reporting, SEC filings, New York Attorney General materials, and Health & Fitness Association benchmarking data. If you've ever wondered how a $10, $30, or $60 recurring gym charge becomes a profitable national business, this is the economics behind it.
