First Time Servicing My Hubs & Free Hub - SKF Bearings

In this video, I service my Zipp hubs and freehub for the first time, swapping in SKF 61903-2RS1 and 61803-2RS1 sealed deep groove ball bearings. These are the 17×30×7 mm and 17×26×5 mm cartridges commonly used in Zipp ZR1-style hubs (the ones on many Firecrest wheels). I show the full process: pulling the old bearings with a blind bearing puller, cleaning everything up, pressing the new premium SKF sealed bearings in with a proper press, and putting it all back together with fresh grease. First time doing this job myself, so you get the real learning curve, the bits that felt fiddly, and what actually worked. If your hubs have started feeling a bit rough or you’re just due a refresh, this is the kind of home-mechanic job that’s very doable with the right tools. A few notes from doing it: • Take your time aligning the press so the bearings go in square. • Don’t over-grease the freehub — a thin, even coat is enough. • The sealed SKF bearings are a solid, readily available upgrade over generic ones and should last well in typical UK weather.
