Not My Battle
The Machine keeps placing emotional weight in your hands, convincing you that everything depends on your ability to carry it mentally. But healing begins softening the burden when you realize not every uncertainty, outcome, or fear was ever yours to hold in the first place.
Reflections on Letting Go of the Need to Carry Everything
One of the deepest shifts in healing came when I started realizing how much emotional weight I had been carrying that was never actually mine to hold. For years, the Machine convinced me that staying mentally engaged was a form of responsibility. If I kept thinking hard enough, preparing carefully enough, or staying alert enough, maybe I could prevent pain, uncertainty, mistakes, or loss before they happened. So I carried everything internally. Not just real responsibilities, but imagined responsibilities. Possible outcomes. Future scenarios. Emotional burdens. Unanswered questions. The Machine constantly expanded the list of things I felt psychologically responsible for managing. And eventually, the weight became overwhelming. The strange thing is that most of this happened invisibly. The pressure felt normal because I had lived inside it for so long. Constant mental carrying became my default posture toward life. Even rest often felt incomplete because part of me still believed I needed to remain emotionally prepared at all times.
That’s what started changing here. Slowly, I began recognizing the difference between genuine responsibility and compulsive psychological burden. The Machine blurred those lines constantly. It treated endless mental involvement as wisdom. But in reality, much of what I was carrying existed entirely inside fear and anticipation. I was trying to emotionally manage realities that had not even happened. Looking back, I can see how exhausting that posture toward life really was. The nervous system stayed in permanent tension because it believed everything depended on my ability to hold things together internally. Every uncertainty felt personal. Every possibility felt heavy. But healing slowly revealed something freeing: Not everything required my emotional ownership.
That realization created enormous resistance at first. Part of me still believed letting go meant becoming careless or irresponsible. The Machine immediately tried to pull me back into the old role: “If you stop carrying this, something bad could happen.” But gradually, I started noticing how little peace constant carrying had actually created. The burden never ended because fear always found something else to place in my hands. That’s why this stage felt so important emotionally. For the first time, I began allowing myself to stop emotionally gripping things that were never fully within my control to begin with. Not through denial. Not through avoidance. Through release.
The future could remain uncertain without me needing to carry it constantly inside my nervous system. Other people’s reactions, life outcomes, unanswered questions, and unknown possibilities no longer had to become permanent emotional assignments living inside my mind. That softened something deep inside me. Because underneath all the fear, I had spent years believing it was my job to hold everything together psychologically. The Machine made me feel responsible for controlling outcomes that no human being can fully control. But life was never asking that from me. And slowly, I began experiencing what it felt like to set the weight down instead of constantly bracing under it.
That’s what this song represents for me. The realization that healing is not just learning how to think differently. It’s learning that you were never meant to carry the entire world emotionally on your own in the first place.
