Chicken day in the dorm, and by the time the trays cleared, somebody’s phone was gone. Cha Cha backs it all the way up to show you how it got there. He had a phone in the room and a schedule worked out with his bunk mates so everybody got their alone time. The third one didn’t have a phone at all, and Cha Cha let him on his here and there — he knew what it was to be lacking. So when that man caught two green dots and found himself sitting on a hundred, Cha Cha walked him all the way through it: buy the scoops, sell the singles, get your motion going, and in a month or two you can buy your own phone. He never did. What he did instead was watch, and let jealousy eat him up. So on chicken day, Cha Cha clocks him posted up at another dorm instead of coming to chow. He doesn’t think much of it — collects his chickens, walks back in — and a few minutes later his other bunk mate busts out the room saying his phone is gone. Checked the spot. Gone. What came after that sent a man to medical, brought the lieutenant down for a lockdown, and cost a bunk mate the blade he had put up. Cha Cha’s phone rode the whole thing out safe, and only because he never put it back in the original spot. The lesson he leaves on it is the part to sit with: help people how you can, not how they want you to. Be tight with yourself and stingy with others, and pour into the ones who are actually trying to help themselves — because what somebody with no hustle wants from you never runs out.
