There are two books on the podcast studio shelf that sparked this conversation. John Stott’s Issues Facing Christians Today — the 1984 edition, the same one Tim read as a teenager and says is the most formative book he’s ever read. Plus Winky Prattney’s Revival. Joel, Stu and Tim work through what John Stott meant to a generation of evangelicals who’d been told they had to choose between preaching the gospel and caring about social issues. Why his refusal to play into that divide — doing both from within a thoroughly conservative evangelical framework — was so formative. And why that divide was more of an American thing than a British one, tracing back through the Clapham Sect, Wilberforce, the abolition of the slave trade and a long heritage of evangelical social conscience. Then Stu tells the story of giving up his first PhD at a Winky Prattney rally; the cross reflected in his watch, the altar call, the guy next to him who wanted to give up his motorbike for Jesus, and why that freedom to go all in on youth ministry was the seed to start Soul Revival. The conversation lands on the question that threads through the whole series: what does faithful discipleship look like in 2026? Not 1976, with communes and youth movements and the social action debates. Not 1826, with the Industrial Revolution and the Sunday School emerging from the collapse of the parish system. But now, with AI avatars attending meetings on your behalf, digital clones indistinguishable from real people, and a world where the most countercultural thing a church can offer is an analogue, incarnate, in-person community for free. Tim’s observation about the Shaun the Sheep movie is the unexpected gem: watching something crafted by hand over seven years in a world drowning in AI slop felt like a genuine premium. And churches, without charging anything, offer that same premium every week. Graham Stanton gets the closing frame: the conservative centre needs the fringe. The fringe needs the conservative centre. Holistic gospel proclamation keeps them together. And it’s God’s chosen method, the fallibility of the church, for reaching the world with his kingdom. Also in this episode: the top ten movies of 1984, Stu meeting John Stott at a traffic light in Amsterdam, the Scopes Monkey Trial, Billy Graham on a rock, and the YMCA’s slow drift from thoroughly Christian to completely secular.
