Porogala Viewpoint – Bandarawela Located in the quiet village of Mahaulpotha, about 3.5 km from Bandarawela, Porogala is a scenic viewpoint that remains largely undiscovered by many travelers. The name "Porogala" comes from the shape of the rock, which resembles the head of an axe. From this spectacular vantage point, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Bandarawela, Kinigama, Diyathalawa, Heel Oya, the railway line, and the distant mountain ranges of the central highlands. To reach Porogala from Bandarawela, travel along the Kinigama Road and continue to Mahaulpotha. At Kinigama Junction, take the road leading toward Mahaulpotha Sri Nigrodharama Maha Viharaya. The temple is approximately 2.8 km from Bandarawela town. Beside the temple wall, a narrow concrete road extends for about 500 meters and leads directly to Porogala Rock. The viewpoint offers stunning views of some of Sri Lanka’s most famous mountains. Looking toward the left, you can spot the Horton Plains plateau and Kirigalpoththa, which rises to 2,388 meters above sea level. Kirigalpoththa is the second-highest mountain in Sri Lanka and the tallest peak that can be reached by the general public. Nearby stands the Hakgala mountain range at 2,169 meters above sea level, while the majestic Piduruthalagala, Sri Lanka’s highest mountain at 2,524 meters, can be seen further to the right. Below the dramatic cliff face of Porogala, visitors can observe the famous Badulla–Bandarawela railway line. The track emerges from Tunnel No. 39 before winding its way toward Heel Oya Railway Station. If timing is on your side, you may even witness a train passing through this picturesque section of railway, creating a memorable sight against the backdrop of the surrounding hills and valleys. #srilanka #bandarawela #porawagala #badulla #ella #viewpoint
