Coral Seeding in Mauritius | SECORE International | A film by Vanessa Cara-Kerr x Keldan

For a few nights each year, corals across Mauritius release their eggs and sperm into the open water. For the team at SECORE International, those nights are everything. This film by Vanessa Cara-Kerr follows SECORE’s Mauritius team as they observe and collect coral spawn, then breed new corals from it. The goal is to restore reefs with resilient, genetically diverse corals, using the corals’ own way of reproducing. SECORE began its work on Mauritius in 2024. Since then, the team has been mapping when local species spawn and building a regional spawning calendar, and the first corals bred on the island are now growing on the reef. From here, they are teaching other organizations across the Indian Ocean to do the same. We are happy and proud to have played a small part in this project.
