“Imagine” is one of the first songs about peace that I remember. I was 11 years old in 1971 when John Lennon released it. I remember playing the song and really thinking about the lyrics—about what those words meant and how they connected with the world I knew in north-central Montana. The early 1970s were a time of conflict, political turmoil, and war. Vietnam was part of the news we saw and heard every day. There were protests, divisions between generations, and a sense that the world was changing faster than an 11-year-old could fully understand. And then there was this simple song asking us to imagine something different. At that age, I didn't understand all of the political, religious, or philosophical ideas behind the lyrics. What I understood was the hope in them. What would the world look like without the things that divided people? Why couldn't people simply live in peace? More than five decades later, I hear “Imagine” differently—but I can still remember that 11-year-old sitting there, listening and wondering about the world. This is “Imagine” through those eyes.
