Discover the incredible hidden history of the Gemeentegrot (Municipal Cave) in Valkenburg, Netherlands! 🚂🇳🇱
Unlike natural caves, this massive underground labyrinth was entirely hand-carved and sawn by humans over 2,000 years. Starting with the Romans, people dug out blocks of marlstone (limestone) to build the local villas and houses you still see in Valkenburg today.
Over the centuries, this constant digging created an astonishing network of passages stretching over 70 kilometers (43 miles) and covering 110 acres!
In this video, we explore the deep underground corridors to see:
• Ancient Cave Art: Charcoal drawings and sculptures that can last forever, including depictions of ancient sea creatures like the Mosasaurus.
• Historic Cart Tracks: Deep ruts worn into the stone floors by the horses and carts used to haul out massive limestone blocks.
• Fossil-Rich Layers: Thick walls packed with prehistoric chalk and shell remains from the ancient chalk sea.
• A Secret Sanctuary: Learn how this cave served as a bomb shelter for 3,000 citizens during WWII, complete with a pressure gate to protect against poison gas, and a later Cold War atomic bunker designed to shelter up to 15,000 people.
💡 Travel Tips for Your Visit:
• Location: Cauberg 4, 6301 BT Valkenburg
• What to Wear: Bring a jacket! The cave maintains a constant temperature of 12°C (53°F) and a very high humidity level of 98% year-round.
• Tour Options: You can explore these fascinating passageways by taking the comfortable 30-minute mini-train tour or a guided walking tour.
