Is Hamburg Germany’s most unexpected city? 🇩🇪 I arrived in Hamburg aboard the Queen Mary 2 not really knowing what to expect — and over the next couple of days the city slowly started to surprise me. We stay at the Hamburg Marriott Hotel, explore Hamburg’s beautiful streets and waterways, visit the impressive Hamburger Kunsthalle, go shopping in the city centre and spend several hours inside the absolutely extraordinary Miniatur Wunderland — complete with miniature cities, moving cars, spaceships and even planes that really take off and land! And, of course, there’s plenty of food. We try burgers in Hamburg, a huge German hotel breakfast, steak at the Cast Iron Grill, traditional schnitzel with an incredible chanterelle mushroom sauce, herring, spätzle, cinnamon rolls and plenty more along the way. Hamburg didn’t completely grab me when we first arrived. It was quiet, we arrived on a Sunday and I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. But the more we explored, the more interesting it became — and by the end of our stay I was seeing the city rather differently. So what is Hamburg actually like? Is it just Germany’s famous port city, or is there much more hiding beneath the surface? TravelDog here. Curiosity rewarded.
