After 58 years, Uncle Boh Geh Canteen opened its doors for the final time on 18 September 2026. Tucked away among the trees, this old-school canteen had a rustic, laid-back atmosphere that felt very different from today's coffeeshops and food courts. Customers came not only for their meals, but also to sit around, chat and enjoy the unhurried kampong-like setting.
On its final day, Uncle Boh Geh's food had already sold out, leaving customers patiently queuing for the Malay stall.
Outside the canteen, I met Jonathan Wong, who was painting the familiar surroundings in watercolour. He later showed me his picture book, turning the pages one by one to reveal scenes he had captured in his paintings. And on the final page was Boh Geh Uncle Canteen. A place that will live on in his paintings, and in the memories of those who came here.
Please watch till the final frame for the parting message.
'Boh Geh' is in Hokkien dialect. It means 'no teeth' or 'toothless'.
