Zenith Defy El Primero 21 RANGE ROVER: I Review A Watch Inspired By a Classic British SUV

The Zenith Defy El Primero 21 “Range Rover” is a 50th anniversary tribute to the Land Rover Range Rover, the original luxury SUV. At 44mm in media blasted titanium, this 250-piece limited edition chronograph is a customized sports watch worthy of the world’s most famous luxury 4x4. Launched in 1969, the Zenith El Primero chronograph family is of the same age as the Range Rover. As the first automatic high-beat chronograph, the El Primero, like the Range Rover, set new standards for performance and innovation in its class. The Defy El Primero 21 Range Rover features a unique matte media blasted PVD titanium case. Unlike the standard watch, this limited edition model includes a solid dial that exudes characteristic British understatement. A small power-reserve at 12 o’clock indicates how much of the 50-minute chronograph power supply remains. The foudroyant seconds hand measures intervals as small as one one-hundredth of a second in spectacular fashion. Each dial features orange super-luminova for nighttime visibility. Small accents of Range Rover orange – the color of the original prototypes – appear on the dial of the watch, the hybrid textile-rubber strap, and the luminescent elements. Zenith El Primero caliber 9004 is a certified chronometer with two separate power supplies, drivetrains, and regulators. The chronograph is powered by a manual wind mainspring barrel and includes a 360,000 vibration-per-hour beat rate. The timekeeping size of the movement includes automatic winding, a 50-hour power reserve, and a standard El Primero 36,000vph beat rate. Moreover, the El Primero escapement includes an unlubricated silicon escapement and hacking seconds. Most examples of the Defy El Primero 21 feature polarizing open dials that tie Zenith closely to its fellow LVMH watch brands TAG Heuer and Hublot. For that reason, many Zenith watch traditionalists prefer the uncommon solid-dial versions of the El Primero 21.
