Senses of the Earth

Senses of the Earth (2025) Composed by Amy Skellern Performed by: Violin 1 - Wan Ariff Adlan Wan Fadzil Adlan Violin 2 - Joonwoo Kim Viola - Elsabe de Klerk Cello - Leitham Brown Double Bass - Sarah Crawford This 5-movement work for string quintet was inspired by the concept of representing all five senses through music in the context of natural forms. I - Fragrance is a very short opening that represents the fleeting scent of a beautiful aroma that passes you by. II - Into Focus symbolizes sight. A chaotic gigue is introduced by the viola, a blurred lens of sound comes together but is briefly intercepted by long strokes of ‘clear’ sounds by the violin 1 and the double bass, as if seeing through the trees to peek outside at the sky. Eventually the chaotic texture melds together into a monophonic soundworld of long chords, and ‘the sky’ becomes clear to see by the end of the movement. III - The Wind, She Whispers softly represents the gentle and sensitive forms of sound that can be heard through natural forms. The beginning captures wind whistling through rock formations through use of harmonics and extended techniques such as sul ponticello. Dynamic swells are a key feature of this movement, the quintet playing musical gestures together thus mimicking gusts of wind. IV – Thorns Opening with a foreboding bass solo, this movement demonstrates the harsher side of nature. For a beautiful rose may be pleasing to the eye, but painful to the touch, for the thorns beneath it’s red petals are sharp. This concept is represented through music by sporadic bartok pizzicato and dissonant textures. V – Poison Berry explores the sense of taste through the desperation of hunger, and the temptation of a red berry. Once consumed, the bitter poison exerts it’s effect in the form of a crazy, frenetic waltz, leading to your ultimate demise. The movement ends with a soft lullaby.
