THE SCARECROW They raised me in the fields of gold, Beneath the summer sun. A weathered coat, a crooked hat, My work had just begun. I stood beneath the open sky, Where restless breezes blow. And watched the world move all around, With nowhere else to go. I watched the seasons changing, The days turn into years. And somewhere in the passing time, I learned to disappear. Does anybody see me? Standing in the rain. I’ve watched the seasons come and go, And watched them come again. I’m still right where you left me, As faithful as before. Does anybody see me? Or notice me no more? The summer turned to autumn, The harvest came and went. The stitching in my faded coat Grew weaker where it bent. The footsteps passed beside me, As countless days went by. And no one thought to turn their head, Or meet my watchful eyes. I’m standing where you left me, As faithful as before. You walk beside me every day, But notice me no more. Does anybody see me? Standing in the rain. I’ve watched the seasons come and go, And watched them come again. I’m still right where you left me, As faithful as before. Does anybody see me? Or notice me no more? A little crow came down today, And rested by my side. It settled on my shoulder, With nowhere else to fly. Perhaps it saw what others missed, Perhaps it only stayed. But when the evening settled in, It never flew away. Does anybody see me? Standing in the rain. I’ve watched the seasons come and go, And watched them come again. I’m still right where you left me, As faithful as before. Does anybody see me? Or notice me no more? The morning comes, the fields awake, The world begins anew. A little crow upon my arm, As daylight filters through. Does anybody see me?
