When walking through the Tsukiji Outer Market, one thing that inevitably catches your attention is the “price.” Seafood, Wagyu beef, sushi, street food—this time, I strolled through Tsukiji, taking in not only the goods lined up at the stalls but also their prices. These prices, often referred to as “Tsukiji prices,” are typical of a tourist destination. From a Japanese perspective, some items might feel “a little expensive.” On the other hand, for travelers visiting Tokyo from overseas, “Tsukiji cuisine” might be something they’re willing to pay that much to experience. So, what exactly is sold there, and for how much? Is Tsukiji really that expensive? Or are the prices reasonable for a tourist destination that draws people from all over the world?
