6th Grade Math 13.1c, Finding the Area of a Rhombus

A rhombus is a special parallelogram. It fulfills the requirements to be a parallelogram of having opposite sides that are parallel and congruent, but goes beyond that by having four congruent sides. Sometimes a rhombus is a square when it has four right angles. A rhombus is a quadrilateral in which all sides are congruent and opposite sides are parallel. A diagonal of a polygon is a line segment that connects two non-adjacent vertices. Non-adjacent means they don't share a common side. A rhombus can be divided into 4 right triangles that can be rearranged into a rectangle. The base of the rectangle is the same length as one of the diagonals of the rhombus. The height of the rectangle is half the length of the other diagonal. We show how the formula for the area of a rectangle compares to the formula for the area of a rhombus.
