It sounds like the ultimate proof that a caller is legitimate: someone claiming to be from your bank tells you to hang up, check the number yourself, and call the bank back.
But that instruction alone doesn’t prove the original caller was genuine.
In this video, we explain how bank-impersonation scams use trust, urgency, caller-ID spoofing, and other forms of social engineering to convince victims that their money is in danger.
We’ll break down why a scammer might actually WANT you to believe you’re independently verifying the call, the warning signs that something isn’t right, and the safest way to contact your bank when you receive an unexpected fraud alert.
Most importantly, never rely solely on a phone number supplied by an unexpected caller, text, or email. Independently contact your bank through its official app, website, the number printed on your card, or another trusted source.
And remember: legitimate banks will not need your password, PIN, or one-time security code simply to “protect” your account.
Watch until the end and share this video with parents, grandparents, friends, and family members — recognizing the trick before panic sets in can make all the difference.
