What did ancient humans actually do all day — before jobs, schedules, alarm clocks, cities, and modern technology?
For hundreds of thousands of years, humans lived as hunter-gatherers. But were they really working every waking hour just to survive? Archaeological evidence suggests a much more complicated story.
In this video, we explore what a typical day may have looked like 50,000 years ago — from hunting and gathering to crafting tools, making art, socializing, storytelling around the fire, and sleeping through the night.
We also look at the surprising evidence from ancient skeletons, including worn teeth, damaged spines, diet, physical activity, and early deaths. Then we follow the major turning point in human history: the rise of farming around 10,000 years ago.
Did agriculture actually make life easier? Or did farming create a trap that slowly consumed more of our time?
We explore the work of anthropologists including Richard Lee, archaeological discoveries from Blombos Cave, ancient musical instruments, Ju/'hoansi social life, firelight storytelling, and the transition from hunter-gatherer life to farming and civilization.
