Alice in Wonderland: real-life battling at Surbiton Croquet Club in charming BBC radio doc.

Programme 3 The Croquet Match Ask most people what they think of croquet and they’ll probably remember the flamingo mallets and hedgehog balls from ‘Alice in Wonderland’. A silly game played by posh girls in pretty frocks. Of course, croquet is nowadays a proper sport with a ruling body and serious competitors, not a place for losing your head: that’s certainly the image they want to present. Curiouser and Curiouser is the programme that uses ‘Alice in Wonderland’ to investigate, in a purely trivial fashion, the wilder shores of British life. Programme 3 travels to Surbiton Croquet Club to find out if croquet is ‘an evil game played by fanatics’ or simply a charming place to meet nice people. At the end of each episode producer, Matt Thompson talks about one element of the radio production. Series devised by Jo Morris.
