The designers change houses. But how much do the clothes change with them? From Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent and Celine to Alessandro Michele’s Gucci and Valentino, we put the collections side by side and ask what travels with a creative director—and what remains of the house. We examine Pierpaolo Piccioli’s couture at Valentino and Balenciaga, Demna’s Gucci, Jonathan Anderson’s Dior, and earlier examples from Tom Ford and John Galliano. Recognising a designer’s signature isn’t automatically a criticism. The question is whether a different house produces a genuinely different creative result.
