Video number 5 of the Groundwork: Screenwriting 101 series.
This video walks through the 10 genres from Save the Cat. I have always found the list of ten story genres and the elements that tend to exisst in each genre super helpful in understanding what type of story I have on my hands. I also dig deeper into two genres with their own distinct structure: horror (the "Monster in the House" pattern) and detective/noir (the "Whydunit" pattern), and how they compare to an imperfect character growing and changing change arc.

Below are links to the 10 story genres according to Save The Cat. Short descriptions of each and a long list of movies in each genre. I use this as a reference tool to help me consider what type of story I am working on and the elements that tend to be held within that story genre. This isn't necessary if it feels distracting, but I share it because I find it helpful...
