She Bought a Ruined Bakery — Until the Mafia Boss Walked In with a Shocking Secret The key didn't fit the lock. Delaney Shaw stood in front of 1408 Mercer Street with the deed still fresh in her hand, and she understood that she had just made a terrible mistake. Four thousand two hundred dollars. That was everything she had paid, and it was everything her late husband had left her in this world. She had signed her name without asking a single question, because the broker had smiled too wide and talked too fast, and because she had spent three weeks sleeping in her car in a grocery store lot, too tired and too hungry to believe that something might finally go right for her. Now she understood why no one else had bid. Plywood over the windows, black paint across the glass, and an entire block so quiet it seemed everyone had learned not to look at that building. Delaney pressed her lips together. She had already cried her share. She had decided that three weeks earlier, the day they pushed her box of tools out onto the sidewalk during the busiest hour at the bakery, and her mother in law told her that her name was not on any of the paperwork. She was twenty seven years old, no parents, no family, no home, and she now legally owned a ruin. She pushed the side door. It wasn't locked. Inside there was dust, and darkness, and against the back wall, a brick oven built into the building itself, the size of a car, still whole after fourteen years. She laid her palm flat against the cold brick and found no crack in it anywhere. It could be saved. Then she stepped back outside, and three black cars sat nose to tail across the whole width of the street. Not one window in the neighborhood opened. That was the detail that told Delaney exactly who the man stepping out of the middle car was. And she had no idea yet that what lay beneath that black paint had been waiting fourteen years for one particular person.
