During his speech, Prime Minister Shah described the recent catastrophic floods in Nepal’s Himalayan region as a “Himalayan Tsunami,” warning that the crisis unfolding in the Himalayas is not only Nepal’s tragedy but a global wake-up call. He emphasized that the world must not only listen to the warnings coming from the Himalayas but act immediately. Highlighting the impacts of climate change, Shah stated that melting glaciers, thawing permafrost, unstable mountain slopes, floods, landslides, and glacial disasters are increasingly threatening Nepal’s people, economy, and development achievements. The Prime Minister proposed the establishment of a “Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism” led by Nepal, India, and China to promote satellite data sharing, monitoring of glacial lakes, stronger early warning systems, and cross-border disaster cooperation. He also called for greater climate justice, emphasizing that countries most affected by climate change need grant-based support, effective climate financing, and practical implementation of international commitments, including the Loss and Damage Fund. Questioning the fairness of the current international system, Shah highlighted the need for a more just global economic order where the voices of smaller and vulnerable nations are heard. The speech also focused on youth aspirations, democratic accountability, resilient infrastructure, clean energy, disaster preparedness, and building a better future for coming generations.
