Red Dog is one of Western Australia’s best-loved legends: a kelpie who roamed the Pilbara without an owner, travelling with truckers, miners and locals, and making friends everywhere he went. In this video we travel through the places linked to his story, from the coast to the ranges. Where we go Dampier: the bronze Red Dog memorial beside the highway. The plaque describes him as the Pilbara Wanderer and credits the many friends he made during his travels. Karratha: the Pilbara’s main regional centre and a good base for exploring. Point Samson: a small coastal community with beaches and calm water. Cossack: a historic former port town on the coast. Millstream-Chichester National Park: permanent pools and palm-lined water in the middle of the ranges. Red Dog Gorge: Manuwarra, the Yindjibarndi name for the area, which also gave the highway its name. Python Pool: a welcome swimming hole beneath rock cliffs. Tom Price: a mining town in the Hamersley Ranges, beside one of the world’s large iron ore operations. Paraburdoo: the town where Red Dog was born. On the way we drive the Manuwarra Red Dog Highway, the Karratha to Tom Price road officially renamed in his honour. We end up at his final resting place, on the outskirts of Cossack. == Video Chapters == 00:00 Intro 00:45 Red Dog 01:16 Dampier 01:43 Industry 01:57 Vicinity 3:01 Red Dog Hwy 04:03 Millstream 07:21 Tom Price 07:41 Paraburdoo 08:06 Cleaverville 08:24 Local Towns Before you travel Many roads are unsealed, so carry water, recovery gear and a spare tyre.
