What if the best fruit to prioritize for eye health after 60 isn’t blueberries?
In this video, I explain why kiwi stands out as a practical long-term choice for older adults who want to support eye health through diet.
We’ll look at:
Why the macula matters
Why lutein and zeaxanthin get so much attention
Why kiwi can be useful even though it isn’t the highest-lutein food
Why nutrient absorption matters
Why blood sugar control may matter more than chasing a “superfruit”
Just as important: food is not the same as treatment.
Healthy eye habits also include regular dilated eye exams, healthy eating, physical activity, avoiding smoking, and managing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
AREDS/AREDS2 supplements are designed for specific people with age-related macular degeneration. They are not general supplements that every healthy adult over 60 needs to take, and they do not prevent AMD from developing or prevent cataracts in the general population.
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, protecting your eyesight is about much more than choosing one fruit. Managing blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, overall diet, physical activity, prescribed medications, and regular eye exams may be far more important.
And if you notice sudden flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow in your vision, or sudden vision loss, seek prompt eye care rather than trying to solve the problem with diet.
