THREE CIRCLES

Premiere performance by the Sofia Philharmonic at the Sofia Arts and Music Festival, July 7 2026. Bulgaria Hall, Sofia Bulgaria.
About the Composition
Three Circles represents a type of Venn diagram - with interlocking circles containing the primary musical elements of pitch, time and timbre.
In Three Circles, I attempt to reevaluate the orchestral tradition through first principles reasoning. Instead of regarding instruments within their traditional historical or orchestral contexts, I seek to utilize them according to their more purely timbral characteristics.
Three Circles employs a host of compositional techniques that are at home inside of an electronic music studio: sound gradients, spectral envelopes and cascades of time-shifted lines are all featured within a post-minimalistic landscape. It is through the confluence of European Sound-Mass, West-Coast Minimalism and modern sound-processing tools that a new consortium of bedfellows are united in this 10-minute exposé.
