"Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after the wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun." - Ecclesiastes 2:11 Over and over again in Ecclesiastes, the theme is reinforced that life is short, we will soon perish, and much of what we do under the sun during these brief years is actually a bit meaningless. When I take an honest look at myself, I see that many of my ambitions are tainted by impure motives. I see that I put too much value on things that are not of eternal importance. I see that many of my dreams and pursuits are simply vanity. This song was written as a prayer. It's a confession of sin and a plea for renewal. It's an acknowledgement that I fall desperately short, and need God to make my heart long for things of true worth.
