Do you sometimes feel pain in one arm, numbness, tingling, heaviness, stiffness, or a “pins and needles” sensation from the fingers toward the arm, shoulder, or neck? These symptoms can have different causes, so rather than forcing a deep stretch, beginning with gentle, controlled movements can be a useful way to mobilize the upper body.
In this video, we practise a series of Sukshma Vyayama (subtle joint movements) starting from the fingers and hands and gradually moving through the wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders, and neck.
Why Start from the Fingers?
Our hands and arms are involved in almost everything we do-typing, using a phone, cooking, driving, lifting, writing, and working at a desk. Staying in repetitive positions for long periods can contribute to muscular fatigue and stiffness around the fingers, wrists, forearms, shoulders, and neck.
Gentle Sukshma Vyayama moves these joints through comfortable ranges while activating and relaxing the surrounding muscles. When performed regularly and appropriately, it can help maintain joint mobility, muscular coordination, movement awareness, and upper-body flexibility.
Movement + Breath
Sukshma Vyayama is not simply about moving the joints quickly. Try to coordinate each movement with slow, comfortable breathing.
When movement and breath are practised together, it becomes easier to notice unnecessary tension in the fingers, forearms, shoulders, jaw, and neck. This mindful approach can make even simple movements a valuable part of your daily yoga practice.
What Areas Are We Working On?
This sequence gradually works through the:
Fingers → Hands → Wrists → Forearms → Elbows → Upper Arms → Shoulders → Upper Back → Neck
The movements can help activate the muscles surrounding these joints, encourage comfortable movement, and prepare the upper body for further Yogasanas.
What About Numbness & Tingling?
Numbness or tingling in one arm should not automatically be assumed to mean that the nerves need “nutrition” or that yoga alone will correct the problem. Symptoms can sometimes arise from nerve irritation or compression around the neck, shoulder, elbow, or wrist, but there are other possible causes as well.
Gentle movement may feel helpful for some people, but persistent, recurrent, or worsening numbness needs proper assessment rather than increasingly intense stretching.
A Simple Practice for Everyday Life
You don’t need complicated Yogasanas every time your upper body feels stiff. Sometimes beginning with small movements, comfortable breathing, and better awareness is exactly what the body needs.
From your fingertips to your neck-move every joint gently, breathe with awareness, and give your upper body the movement it often misses. 🌿
⚠️ Important: Never force the neck, shoulder, wrist, or arm into painful movements. Stop if numbness, tingling, burning, weakness, or radiating pain increases during the practice. Seek medical evaluation for persistent one-sided numbness or weakness, loss of grip strength, worsening hand coordination, or symptoms following an injury. Sudden arm weakness or numbness-especially with facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe dizziness, chest pain, or breathing difficulty-requires urgent medical attention.
