Vincent Astor inherited $87 million the morning the Titanic took his father to the bottom. He was 20 years old. He married three times, had no children, and when he died in 1959, the last male Astor of the American line chose to send the fortune out of the family forever — through the Vincent Astor Foundation, which gave away more than $175 million before it dissolved in 1997.
This is the story of why.
Every claim sourced from the public record: TIME magazine's 1959 obituary, Justin Kaplan's Pulitzer-winning Astor biography, the National Archives, the FDR Presidential Library, and the Surrogate's Court probate filings.
