A man runs west across the Pecos with a posse on his heels and hell on his face, until a dead preacher's cross and his wife's voice in the wind turn his horse back home. Browncoat Sinners - hard roads, dirty hands, still prayin'. 🎵 Lyrics below [Intro] (West of the Pecos... I'm a dead man walkin'...) [Verse 1] Crossed that river at midnight Posse breathin' on my heels Left my name back in San Angelo Along with everything I feel Water's the color of whiskey Runnin' brown beneath the moon West of the Pecos there ain't no law Just me, this Colt, and a hangman's tune [Verse 2] I lit a lamp in the window Kept it burnin' through the drought Told the children that their daddy Was just findin' his way back out Every dust storm brings a rumor Every rumor brings a name He's runnin' west from everything While I'm still prayin' east the same [Pre-Chorus] Somewhere between the water And whatever's left of grace There's a man who can't stop runnin' From the hell that's on his face [Chorus] I'm west of the Pecos, east of hell Runnin' from a bell I used to ring Every mile I put behind me Buries one more sacred thing Momma always said the river Marks the place where good men fall West of the Pecos, east of hell And I don't call this home at all [Verse 3] Found an old church half-collapsed Out past the Guadalupe line Preacher long since dead and buried But his cross was still standin' fine I sat there in the rubble With the desert goin' cold And I heard her voice inside the wind Sayin', "Baby, please come home" [Pre-Chorus] Somewhere between the water And whatever's left of grace There's a man who can't stop runnin' From the hell that's on his face [Chorus] I'm west of the Pecos, east of hell Runnin' from a bell I used to ring Every mile I put behind me Buries one more sacred thing Momma always said the river Marks the place where good men fall West of the Pecos, east of hell And I don't call this home at all [Bridge] I've been runnin' so long, I forgot which way is gone The lamp's still burnin', the porch light's still on I don't know if mercy rides this far west Then turn your horse around and let it be your test [Final Chorus] I'm turnin' back from the Pecos, out of hell Ridin' toward a bell I'm gonna ring Every mile I put behind me Wakes up one more sacred thing Momma always said the river Marks the place where lost men turn West of the Pecos, out of hell Headed home to watch that lamp still burn [Outro] Headed home... to watch it burn 🔔 Subscribe for new dark outlaw country every week. #DarkCountry #OutlawCountry #GothicCountry
