In 1996, Atlus released a game for the PlayStation called “Megami Ibunroku: Persona,” a JRPG centred around a group of high school kids travelling to another world. Armed with nothing but the power of their hearts and the strength of their resolve, these children would venture through the unknown and learn more about the different sides of humanity. Persona 1 is an extremely unique game, one that was created with the intent of broadening the appeal of the wider Megami Tensei franchise. While clearly built off of the foundation of past entries, the story, characters, and setting would opt for a more modern edge. This gave the game an immediate hook, as it allowed players to immerse themselves in a world not too different than our own. Persona 1 was a massive success in Japan, so the logical next step was to bring the game to foreign audiences, though with this decision comes new challenges.
Persona is a very Japanese game. One that the director, Cozy Okada, believed that foreigners would struggle to connect with. Since this game’s entire appeal hinges on finding relatability in its world and characters, something had to change; with the results of that direction being Revelations Persona. This is the version that we ended up getting in the West way back in the 90s and nowadays has a pretty negative reputation. When you mention Revelations Persona to a fan of the franchise, there’s a high chance they’ll think it’s a punchline to a joke. People tend to write this version off due to the changes made to the localization, viewing it mostly as a relic of the past, a stepping stone that got us to the point where we are now. It’s a game where its standing within the community overshadows its actual quality. To put it simply, not many people have played this game and instead rely on word of mouth. So, let Nam’s Compendium throw you a bone and show you what this game is REALLY like. From the highs to the lows, to everything else in between. Because trust me, this game gets pretty wild.
When Persona came to the West. Revelations Persona is a bit of a laughing stock in the Persona community. Not only is Revelations Persona radically different from Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5, it also alters and changes the original Persona in unexpected ways. Revelations Persona was the first Atlus JRPG we got in the West. Persona 1 is special to a lot of people; however, this isn't a Persona 1 review, Persona 1 retrospective, or Persona 1 analysis. Rather, this is a video focusing solely on the changes Revelations Persona makes to Persona 1 and how it creates a dramatically different experience. While I wouldn't call this a full Revelations Persona review, a Revelations Persona critique, or a Revelations Persona retrospective, it shares ideas with a traditional Persona 1 Retrospective.
