The REAL Reason Eustace Conway’s Turtle Island Was Shut Down In October 2012, a consulting firm hired by Watauga County, North Carolina, submitted its findings on a property in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The firm’s engineer had examined the buildings one by one. His conclusion, written into the official report, was specific: many of the structures were “not structurally sound.” His recommendation to county officials was that they seek a court order to vacate the property entirely, “to protect the lives of the public and the interns.” The property he was describing had been open to the public for twenty-five years.
