During Bonalu, women prepare a special offering of rice cooked with milk and jaggery. The offering is placed in a decorated earthen or brass pot adorned with **neem leaves, turmeric and vermilion**. A small lamp is traditionally placed on top. Women carry these beautifully decorated pots on their heads and proceed towards the temple to offer them to Goddess Mahakali. The offering is considered an expression of *thanksgiving to the Goddess for her blessings and protection.* 🌸 A Festival Filled With Colour and Tradition One of the most beautiful sights during Bonalu is the sight of women dressed in traditional sarees and jewellery, carrying decorated Bonam pots. Alongside the women are the energetic performances of **Pothuraju**, traditionally regarded as the brother of the Mother Goddess. Dressed in traditional attire, Pothuraju dances to the powerful rhythm of the drums and leads the procession towards the temple. The colourful **Thottelu**, traditional decorations and enormous crowds of devotees create a spectacular visual celebration. 🛕 The Famous Bonalu Temples of Hyderabad Bonalu is celebrated across Hyderabad and Secunderabad, with several temples becoming major centres of devotion. The celebrations traditionally begin at **Golconda Fort**, followed by major festivities at: *Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Temple – Secunderabad* *Balkampet Yellamma Temple* *Pochamma and Katta Maisamma temples* *Lal Darwaza Mahankali Temple* *Akkanna Madanna Temple – Haribowli* *Muthyalamma Temple – Shah Ali Banda* Lakhs of devotees visit these temples during the festival period to offer prayers and seek the blessings of the Goddess. 🥁 Hyderabad Comes Alive In the 2026 celebrations, thousands of devotees gathered at the **Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad**, where decorated Bonams, Pothuraju performances, drums and devotional chants created a spectacular festive atmosphere. The Lal Darwaza celebrations also attracted huge crowds. On August 9, 2026, Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda, his brother Anand Deverakonda and filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga visited the Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple and offered prayers during the Bonalu festivities. 🌿 The Story Behind Bonalu According to the Hyderabad District administration, the festival is traditionally associated with an outbreak of plague in the Hyderabad and Secunderabad region in **1813**. A military battalion from Hyderabad stationed in Ujjain is said to have prayed to Goddess Mahakali, promising to install an idol in Secunderabad if the people were protected from the epidemic. When the battalion returned, devotees believed that the Goddess had answered their prayers, and the tradition of worshipping Mahankali through Bonalu became deeply rooted in the twin cities. 🔥 Rangam and Ghatam Bonalu is also associated with two fascinating traditional rituals – **Rangam and Ghatam**. During **Rangam**, a woman traditionally enters a trance-like state and is believed by devotees to convey messages from the Goddess. The *Ghatam* is a decorated copper pot representing the Mother Goddess.
