Before radiators, British families got through hard winters with one coal fire and a handful of sensible habits. I grew up in a pit village in South Yorkshire, born in 1950, and in this video I share the fifteen habits my mother and grandmother used every winter. I explain why each one works: heavy curtains drawn at dusk, a blanket under the bottom sheet, porridge in the morning and cocoa at bedtime. Most of them cost nothing, and they still help the heat you pay for go further today.
These habits are there to help you keep warm, not to make you go without. If you are older or poorly, please keep your main room properly warm. I would love to hear what your family used to warm the bed, and what it was called where you grew up. Tell me the town and the name in the comments. If you enjoy remembering how things used to be done, do subscribe, and look in on the neighbours this winter.
