Jehovah’s Witnesses taught me what it meant to be “godly” for most of my life. I left five years ago — and apparently, that means people like me can now be dismissed as godless. Yeah. I have some thoughts about that. 😂 In this video, I respond to something said in a recent Jehovah’s Witnesses broadcast about apostates — people like me who have left the organization and openly talk about our experiences. I’m not interested in telling anyone what they have to believe. I’m interested in something much simpler: nobody gets to define my character, my heart, or whether I care about other people just because I left their religion. I also talk about what life actually looks like five years after leaving — the conditioning that sticks around, the freedom I’ve found, and why I’m finally comfortable speaking for myself. I’m Rachel Chatterton, author of Good Slave: A Memoir of Faith, Control, and Freedom, a memoir about growing up as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, leaving, and discovering that getting out was only the beginning. 📖 Learn more about Good Slave: rechatterton.com If you’ve left Jehovah’s Witnesses or another high-control religion, I’d love to hear from you in the comments: What’s something people assumed about you after you left that simply wasn’t true?
