Dubai went from a desert fishing town to a futuristic megacity in a single lifetime. But what was erased to make it happen?
In the 2000s, entire districts like Al Satwa were spray-painted with black X's and bulldozed for luxury developments. In the 1970s, half of the historic Bastakiya quarter was torn down for offices. The coral-stone warehouses, the old town wall, the world of pearl divers and dhow merchants — deleted street by street in one of the fastest urban transformations in human history.
This is the story of what was demolished to build Dubai: Sheikh Rashid's impossible creek gamble, the fight to save Bastakiya, the fall of Al Satwa, and the strange afterlife of a city that now builds replicas of the past it destroyed.
